Cancún is two places that share a name: a 22 km sandbar of resort hotels facing the Caribbean, and a working city on the mainland where prices drop and the street food starts. Most of the trip comes down to three choices: the month, which side of that lagoon you sleep on, and which day trip you make. Fares and fees below were checked on 4 October 2026.
When is the best time to visit Cancún?
December to April. It is warm every month, so the real variables are rain, storms and seaweed, and the dry season wins on all three.
| Months | Average high / low (SMN) | Rain | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec–Feb | 28.7–30.1°C / 20.0–21.0°C | 59–104 mm a month | Peak winter sun, highest prices around Christmas |
| Mar–Apr | 31.5–33.1°C / 21.4–22.9°C | about 40 mm, the driest | The sweet spot; Easter week gets busy |
| May–Jul | 34.0–34.8°C / 24.2–25.0°C | 67–184 mm | Hot and humid; sargassum season |
| Aug–Oct | 32.2–35.1°C / 23.7–25.0°C | 102–277 mm | Hurricane peak, cheapest rooms |
| Nov | 30.3°C / 22.3°C | about 131 mm | Shoulder month, storms tailing off |
Figures are the 1991-2020 normals from the Cancún station of Mexico’s National Weather Service (SMN). October is the wettest month, with about 277 mm of rain over roughly 18 rainy days, against about 5 rainy days in March.
Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. The US National Hurricane Center puts the peak around 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. A late-summer trip is cheap for a reason: buy travel cover that includes storm disruption, and read our hurricane season travel guide before booking.
Sargassum, the brown seaweed that piles up on Caribbean beaches, is mostly a spring and summer problem. The University of South Florida’s Sargassum Watch bulletin for September 2026 showed amounts declining but still high for the month, after a heavy season. Winter is usually the clean-beach window. Where should you stay in Cancún?
The Hotel Zone is shaped like a number 7: the short top arm faces the calm bay towards Isla Mujeres, and the long arm faces the open Caribbean.
| Area | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel Zone, north (Punta Cancún area) | Walkable restaurants and shops, calmer bay-side water, the ADO airport bus stop | Busy and built up |
| Hotel Zone, east and south | Big resorts on the open Caribbean beach, the classic turquoise view | Stronger waves and the beaches most exposed to sargassum; you rely on buses or taxis |
| Downtown (El Centro) | Lower room prices, local food at Parque de las Palapas, the ADO bus terminal | A city bus ride to the beach |
| Costa Mujeres | Newer all-inclusive resorts about 20 minutes north of the Hotel Zone | Isolated; little to walk to |
First trip and the beach is the point? Book the northern Hotel Zone, where you can walk to restaurants and catch the airport bus at the door. On a tighter budget, sleep downtown and ride the bus to Playa Marlin or the bay beaches. Our best budget hotels in Cancún guide compares specific rooms. Compare Cancún hotel prices by area .

What should you not miss in Cancún?
| Sight | Entry for foreign visitors (2026) | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel Zone beaches | Free, public access | Playa Marlin and the bay-side beaches are easy by bus |
| Museo Maya de Cancún | MXN 210, includes the San Miguelito ruins | Closed Mondays; open 9:00 to 18:00 |
| El Rey archaeological zone | MXN 145 | Kilometre 18 of Kukulcán Boulevard; open daily 8:00 to 17:00 |
| MUSA underwater museum | Snorkel trips from about 58 US dollars | Sculptures at Punta Nizuc and Manchones; book with MUSA or a licensed operator |
| Isla Mujeres | Ferry MXN 290 one way | Ultramar from Puerto Juárez; Playa Norte is a walk from the ferry |
The Museo Maya is the best rainy-day stop: one ticket covers the galleries and a jungle path to the San Miguelito site, with last entry to the ruins at 16:30. Eat downtown at Parque de las Palapas or Mercado 28, where tacos, marquesitas and fresh juices cost a fraction of Hotel Zone menus.
What day trips can you take from Cancún?
- Isla Mujeres. The easiest escape: Ultramar ferries from Puerto Juárez cost MXN 290 one way or MXN 580 return for an adult.
- Chichén Itzá. The Maya city is a long day out by tour, car or ADO bus. INAH charges MXN 105, and the Yucatán state adds MXN 592 for foreign visitors, so plan on roughly MXN 700. The site opens 8:00 to 16:00; arrive early, since there is little shade.
- Tulum and Playa del Carmen. South along the coast by ADO bus or the Tren Maya. Our Tulum guide covers the ruins, beaches and cenotes.
- Puerto Morelos. A low-key town between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, also on the Tren Maya line.
What goes wrong on a Cancún trip?
- Booking the cheapest month without reading why. August to October is the hurricane peak, and October averages about 277 mm of rain.
- Assuming every beach is clean. Between spring and early autumn, check the sargassum outlook before you choose a hotel on the open-sea side.
- Riding the airport bus to a far resort. It stops at Punta Cancún, not at your hotel; budget for a taxi or transfer to the southern Hotel Zone.
- Forgetting the state tourist tax. Quintana Roo charges foreign visitors a per-person tax called Visitax, paid online at visitax.gob.mx before you fly home.
- Skipping the safety check. The US State Department rates Quintana Roo “exercise increased caution” (Level 2). Use licensed taxis and check your own government’s advice.

How many days do you need in Cancún?
Four to five days covers it: two beach days, a day on Isla Mujeres, a half day at the Museo Maya and El Rey, and one long trip to Chichén Itzá or Tulum. Add days to dive the reefs, or split the week with Tulum or Mexico City. Our Mexico budget guide covers daily costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit Cancún?
December to April is the best time to visit Cancún: Mexico’s weather service (SMN) records average highs of about 29 to 33°C and the driest months of the year, with March averaging under 40 mm of rain. October is the wettest month, at about 277 mm, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking from mid-August to mid-October.
Is it better to stay in the Hotel Zone or downtown Cancún?
Stay in the Hotel Zone if the beach is the point of the trip: it is a 22 km strip along Kukulcán Boulevard with hotels on the sand. Stay downtown (El Centro) if you want lower room prices, local food and the ADO bus terminal, and accept a city bus ride to the beach. Costa Mujeres, about 20 minutes north of the Hotel Zone, suits a quieter all-inclusive stay.
How do I get from Cancún airport to the Hotel Zone?
ADO runs buses from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 to the Hotel Zone stop at Punta Cancún, near kilometre 9 of Kukulcán Boulevard, for around MXN 170 in about 45 minutes, with up to nine departures a day. The bus does not stop at individual resorts, so a hotel shuttle, a pre-booked transfer or a taxi is simpler if you are staying further down the strip. ADO also runs to the downtown bus terminal.
Is there sargassum in Cancún in winter?
Sargassum seaweed is mostly a spring and summer problem on the Mexican Caribbean coast, and the University of South Florida’s Sargassum Watch bulletins showed amounts declining in September 2026, though still high for the time of year. The east-facing Hotel Zone beaches are the most exposed; the bay-facing northern beaches and Isla Mujeres are usually the fallback.
How do I get from Cancún to Isla Mujeres?
Take the Ultramar ferry from Puerto Juárez, north of downtown. Ultramar lists the general public fare at MXN 290 one way or MXN 580 return for an adult. The crossing is short, so Isla Mujeres works well as a day trip.
How many days do you need in Cancún?
Four to five days covers Cancún well: two beach days in the Hotel Zone, a day on Isla Mujeres, the Museo Maya and El Rey ruins, and one longer day trip to Chichén Itzá or south to Tulum. Add more days if you want to dive the reefs or base yourself further down the coast.
Start planning your Cancún trip
If an all-inclusive package already covers your week, you don’t need this part. If you’re booking flights and a room separately, compare a few dates between January and April first, when the weather is most reliable.
