Quick Answer

The best time to visit Antigua Guatemala is the November to April dry season, when WMO 1991-2020 normals for INSIVUMEH’s Guatemala City station, at a similar altitude, show under 10 mm of rain a month from December to March and highs of about 24 to 25°C. December is a strong winter escape, but it and Holy Week (21 to 28 March 2027) are the busiest weeks, so book early. Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage town at about 1,530 m, the former colonial capital largely ruined by the 1773 earthquakes. Stay inside the colonial grid near the Parque Central and walk everywhere. A shared shuttle from La Aurora airport costs around 15 to 20 US dollars and takes about an hour. Give it three to four days, including a guided volcano hike: the Acatenango park reopened on 7 August 2026 after Volcán de Fuego’s eruption, but Fuego itself is off limits, so check INSIVUMEH before you go.

Antigua is the place almost every Guatemala trip starts: a grid of cobbled streets, pastel facades and earthquake-cracked churches, with three volcanoes filling the end of the streets. It is compact, walkable and the best base for the country’s volcano hikes. The choices that matter are the month, the street you sleep on and which volcano you climb. Every fact below was checked on 29 October 2026.

When is the best time to visit Antigua Guatemala?

Antigua has spring-like weather all year; what changes is the rain. The figures are WMO 1991-2020 climate normals for INSIVUMEH’s Guatemala City station (1,502 m), the closest official long-term station at a similar altitude to Antigua.

Evenings are cool in the dry season, with lows around 15°C in the city station’s records, so pack a fleece. Volcano summits are another matter: the UK FCDO notes that high volcanoes can drop below freezing at night.

Packing
Bagail 8-Set Compression Packing Cubes

The best value compression set going. A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

How do you get to and around Antigua?

International flights land at La Aurora airport in Guatemala City. Antigua has no airport and no train, so the last stretch is by road.

What should you not miss in Antigua?

Antigua was founded on its present site in March 1543 and served as capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala for 230 years, until the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773 destroyed much of it and the capital moved to what is now Guatemala City. UNESCO lists it for its Renaissance-style street grid and the monuments that survive, many as ruins.

Volcano hikes from Antigua

  • Pacaya: the classic half-day hike, run by tour operators from Antigua with a local guide, and a park entrance fee paid at the trailhead.
  • Acatenango: usually an overnight hike with a guide, camping near the summit for views of Fuego. The park reopened to tourists on 7 August 2026, after Volcán de Fuego entered a critical explosive phase on 3 and 4 August, with pyroclastic flows reaching up to 7 km from its cone according to INSIVUMEH. Access to Fuego through the park remains prohibited.
  • Volcán de Agua: the volcano behind the Santa Catalina Arch. The US State Department advises never to hike trails or volcanoes without a qualified local guide, because robberies happen and help can be hard to reach.

The FCDO adds that there is no mountain rescue service and that local tour organisers tend to underestimate the risks. Before any climb, check INSIVUMEH’s volcano bulletins and CONRED, the disaster agency, for access restrictions.

Christmas and Holy Week in Antigua

Christmas. On 7 December at about 6 pm, Guatemalans mark the Quema del Diablo, the Burning of the Devil. In Antigua the burning has been concentrated in recent years into one community event in the La Concepción neighbourhood rather than bonfires across town. December is dry, with about 5 mm of rain on average, and rooms fill from mid-December to New Year.

Holy Week. Semana Santa in Guatemala joined UNESCO’s intangible heritage list in 2022, and Antigua’s processions over carpets of coloured sawdust and flowers are its best-known expression. In 2027 Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday, 21 March, to Easter Sunday, 28 March; Lent processions fill the weekends before it.

Day trips from Antigua

Lake Atitlán. A crater lake ringed by volcanoes and Maya towns, roughly three hours by tourist shuttle. It works better as an overnight than a day trip.

Chichicastenango. The highland market town is best on its market days, Thursday and Sunday, when stalls fill the streets around the Santo Tomás church. Many shuttles combine it with Lake Atitlán.

Tikal. Too far for a day trip by road: Tikal is about nine hours from Guatemala City. Fly to Flores instead; foreigners pay Q150 for the park, plus Q100 for the sunrise or sunset tour. Our Guatemala guide covers the full route.

What goes wrong in Antigua?

  • Volcano plans change at short notice. Fuego’s August 2026 eruption brought evacuations of nearby communities and the closure of the RN-14 highway; check INSIVUMEH and your operator the day before.
  • Holiday prices. December and Holy Week rates are the highest of the year, and the cheapest central rooms go first.
  • Security on the road. The FCDO reports armed robberies on most tourist routes between Guatemala City, Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Tikal, and the US State Department rates Guatemala Level 3, reconsider travel. Travel by day in booked shuttles and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Earthquakes. UNESCO notes the town sits in an earthquake-prone region; know your hotel’s exits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Antigua Guatemala?

November to April, the dry season. WMO 1991-2020 normals for INSIVUMEH’s Guatemala City station, at a similar altitude, show under 10 mm of rain a month from December to March and highs of about 24 to 25°C. December and Holy Week (21 to 28 March 2027) are the busiest and most expensive weeks, so book early for both.

How do I get from Guatemala City airport to Antigua?

Take a shared tourist shuttle or a pre-booked private transfer from La Aurora airport. Shared shuttles cost around 15 to 20 US dollars per person and take about an hour without traffic, longer at rush hour. The UK FCDO points to prepaid taxi vouchers at the INGUAT office in arrivals and warns against hailing taxis on the street.

Can you hike Acatenango and see Volcán de Fuego?

Acatenango is open again: its park reopened to tourists on 7 August 2026, after Volcán de Fuego’s explosive phase of 3 and 4 August, but access to Fuego through the park remains prohibited. The hike is usually done overnight with a guide, and the FCDO notes that high volcanoes can drop below freezing at night. Check INSIVUMEH’s bulletins before you book.

Where should I stay in Antigua Guatemala?

Stay inside the colonial grid within a few blocks of the Parque Central for your first visit, so the Santa Catalina Arch, the cathedral ruins and the restaurants are all walkable. The streets north towards La Merced are just as central. Guesthouses on the edge of the grid are quieter and cheaper but mean longer walks on cobbles after dark.

What is Antigua Guatemala like at Christmas?

Dry and busy. December brings about 5 mm of rain on average, and on 7 December at about 6 pm Guatemalans mark the Quema del Diablo, the Burning of the Devil, which in Antigua has been concentrated in recent years into a single community burn in the La Concepción neighbourhood. Hotels fill up from mid-December to New Year.

How many days do you need in Antigua Guatemala?

Three to four days: a day for the colonial centre and ruins, a half day for the Pacaya hike or a full overnight on Acatenango, and a day trip to Lake Atitlán or the Chichicastenango market, which runs on Thursdays and Sundays. Add a night if you want to recover after Acatenango.

Start planning your Antigua trip

If you are coming for Christmas, New Year or Holy Week, book the room first and the flight second: central Antigua sells out before the airfares peak. For the rest of the dry season, compare a few dates in January and February.
