Quick Answer

The best time to visit Guatemala is the November to April dry season. WMO 1991-2020 normals for INSIVUMEH’s Guatemala City station show under 10 mm of rain a month from December to March, with highs of about 24 to 25°C, while June and September each bring around 250 mm. That makes December a strong winter escape, and Google Flights named Guatemala City among the five trending international destinations for US travellers at Christmas and New Year 2026. Fly into La Aurora airport, then take a shuttle to Antigua Guatemala, the UNESCO-listed colonial town about an hour away, before Lake Atitlán and Tikal. Tikal costs foreigners Q150, about 20 US dollars, on the Ministry of Culture and Sports portal. UK and US citizens get 90 days without a visa across the CA-4 countries. Plan eight to twelve days, use private shuttles rather than public buses, and check the US State Department’s Level 3 advisory before booking.
Key takeaways

Guatemala packs a colonial capital, a volcanic lake ringed by Maya towns and one of the great Maya cities into one compact trip. Most trips follow the same loop, so the real decisions are the month, how long to give each stop and how to move between them safely. Every price, rule and date below was checked on 29 October 2026.

Guatemala month by month

The highlands where most visitors spend their time sit around 1,500 m, so the weather is spring-like all year and the seasons are about rain, not temperature. The figures are WMO 1991-2020 climate normals for INSIVUMEH’s Guatemala City station, at 1,502 m. Antigua Guatemala, at about 1,530 m, has a similar climate.

MonthAverage high / lowRain (rain days)Best for
January23.7°C / 15.3°C3 mm (0.7)Dry, clear volcano views
February24.3°C / 15.6°C4 mm (0.8)The driest stretch for hiking
March24.8°C / 16.0°C10 mm (1.2)Lent processions; Holy Week 21 to 28 March 2027
April25.2°C / 16.9°C31 mm (3.6)The warmest month; Tikal at its hottest
May24.9°C / 17.3°C142 mm (10.4)Rains begin, prices drop
June24.3°C / 17.2°C254 mm (17.5)One of the wettest months
July24.3°C / 17.0°C178 mm (13.8)A short drier spell in some years
August24.3°C / 17.0°C202 mm (15.2)Green season, afternoon storms
September24.1°C / 17.0°C247 mm (18.1)The rainiest month; fewest visitors
October23.9°C / 16.8°C146 mm (12.1)Rains easing late in the month
November23.7°C / 16.1°C36 mm (3.5)The dry season starts; good value
December23.5°C / 15.6°C5 mm (0.9)Holidays, dry skies, busy Antigua

Two other climates matter. At Flores, the gateway to Tikal at 123 m in the lowland Petén, the same normals give highs of 29°C in December and January and about 36°C in April and May, with rain spread more widely through the year: 86 mm in December, but only 35 mm in February. At Lake Atitlán, the Santiago Atitlán station (1,569 m) shows January highs of 25°C but lows of 11°C, so bring a warm layer for evenings by the water.

Packing
Bagail 8-Set Compression Packing Cubes

The best value compression set going. A double-zip pulls the air out so a week of clothes shrinks to a few inches thick, and you get eight pieces (cubes plus a shoe and laundry bag) for roughly the price of one branded cube. The fabric is thin and the zips aren’t lifetime kit, but for the money nothing beats it.

Best time to visit Guatemala by trip type

Christmas, New Year and a winter escape (December to January)

December is the heart of the dry season, with about 5 mm of rain in Guatemala City, and it is when US demand peaks: Google’s 5 October 2026 holiday trends named Guatemala City the fifth trending international destination for Christmas and New Year. On 7 December, Guatemalans mark the Quema del Diablo (Burning of the Devil) with bonfires in the evening, and the season runs on through Christmas. Book Antigua rooms early for the holiday fortnight. See our Antigua Guatemala guide and where to go in December for how it compares.

Volcano hikes (November to April)

Clear dry-season mornings give the best views from Pacaya, Acatenango and Volcán de Agua. Conditions change fast, though: Volcán de Fuego entered a critical explosive phase on 3 and 4 August 2026, with pyroclastic flows reaching up to 7 km from the cone, and the Acatenango park reopened on 7 August 2026 with access to Fuego through it still prohibited. Check INSIVUMEH’s volcano bulletins before any climb, and see the Antigua guide for the details.

Holy Week (March or April)

Semana Santa in Guatemala was added to UNESCO’s intangible heritage list in 2022, and Antigua’s processions over sawdust carpets are the best known. In 2027 Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday, 21 March, to Easter Sunday, 28 March. It is the busiest and most expensive week of the year in Antigua.

Green season (May to October)

Mornings are often clear and afternoons stormy. Hotel prices fall and the countryside turns lush, but trails get muddy and some roads are slowed by landslides. September is the wettest month.

Where to go in Guatemala

Antigua Guatemala. The former colonial capital, founded on its present site in 1543 and largely ruined by the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a Renaissance street grid, baroque churches and three volcanoes on the skyline. It is the easiest base for a first trip: read our Antigua Guatemala guide for where to stay and the volcano hikes.

Lake Atitlán. A crater lake ringed by three volcanoes and Maya towns, reached from Antigua by tourist shuttle in roughly three hours. Panajachel is the main arrival point, and boats (lanchas) link the other villages.

Chichicastenango. A highland town famous for its Thursday and Sunday market around the Santo Tomás church, often combined with Lake Atitlán. INGUAT runs a tourist information office in town.

Tikal and Flores. Tikal National Park is 484 km, about nine hours by road, from Guatemala City, or 63 km, about an hour, from Flores, according to the Ministry of Culture and Sports. Most visitors fly to Mundo Maya airport at Flores and base themselves on the island town. Foreigners pay Q150 to enter the park, the sunrise or sunset tour adds Q100 and does not include a guide, and children under 10 enter free. Buy tickets on the ministry’s portal or pay cash at a BANTRAB agency.

Guatemala City. The capital and the arrival point for international flights at La Aurora airport. Most travellers transfer straight to Antigua; if you stay, keep to the zones your hotel recommends.

How much does Guatemala cost?

Guatemala uses the quetzal. The Bank of Guatemala’s reference rate on 29 October 2026 was 7.64 quetzales to the US dollar, and US dollars are far easier to exchange than other foreign currencies.

How to get around Guatemala

Tourist shuttles. Shared minibuses run between La Aurora airport, Antigua, Lake Atitlán, Chichicastenango and other tourist towns, and they are the standard way to travel. Expect around 15 to 20 US dollars a person from the airport to Antigua, about an hour without traffic.

Domestic flights to Flores. The road to Tikal takes about nine hours, so most visitors fly from Guatemala City to Mundo Maya airport at Flores.

Avoid public buses. Both the UK FCDO and the US State Department advise against the repainted US school buses known as chicken buses. At the airport, the FCDO points to prepaid taxi vouchers sold at the INGUAT office in arrivals.

Entry requirements, safety and connectivity

Entry. UK and US citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa, and both must complete Guatemala’s electronic immigration and customs declaration before entering and before leaving. The UK FCDO says your passport needs at least six months’ validity on arrival and two blank pages. The 90 days apply across the CA-4 area (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua) and do not restart when you cross between them; British nationals need a visa for Honduras. You can extend your stay by paying a fee before the 90 days run out; overstaying means a fine at the airport.

Safety. The US State Department rates Guatemala Level 3, reconsider travel, because of crime and terrorism (issued 12 March 2026), and says do not travel to San Marcos and Huehuetenango departments, Zone 18 of Guatemala City or Villa Nueva. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel within 5 km of the Mexican border from the Pacific coast to the Gracias a Dios crossing, and to three towns in Huehuetenango. Armed robberies have occurred on the tourist routes between Guatemala City, Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Tikal, which is why private shuttles and daylight travel matter.

The rainy season runs from May to October, when June and September each bring around 250 mm.

Is Guatemala worth visiting at Christmas and New Year?

Yes, if you book early. December is the heart of the dry season, with about 5 mm of rain in Guatemala City, and Google Flights named Guatemala City among the five trending international destinations for US travellers at Christmas and New Year 2026. Antigua’s hotels fill up over the holidays and again for Holy Week, which runs from 21 to 28 March 2027.

How much does it cost to visit Tikal?

Foreign visitors pay Q150 to enter Tikal National Park, about 20 US dollars at the Bank of Guatemala’s late-October 2026 rate, according to the Ministry of Culture and Sports ticket portal. The sunrise or sunset tour costs an extra Q100, guides are not included, and children under 10 enter free. Buy online or pay cash at a BANTRAB agency.

Do I need a visa for Guatemala?

UK and US citizens can visit for up to 90 days without a visa, and both must fill in Guatemala’s electronic immigration and customs declaration before entering and leaving. The 90 days cover the whole CA-4 area of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua and do not restart when you cross between them. The UK FCDO notes that British nationals need a visa for Honduras.

Is Guatemala safe for tourists?

Most visits to Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Tikal go smoothly, but crime is real. The US State Department rates Guatemala Level 3, reconsider travel, and says do not travel to San Marcos, Huehuetenango, Zone 18 of Guatemala City or Villa Nueva. The UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel near the Mexican border and recommends private shuttles over public buses.

How many days do you need in Guatemala?

Eight to twelve days covers the classic loop: three nights in Antigua, three at Lake Atitlán with a Thursday or Sunday at the Chichicastenango market, and two or three in Flores for Tikal. With a week, choose between Lake Atitlán and Tikal rather than rushing both.

Start planning your Guatemala trip

For dry skies, aim for November to April; for the holidays, book Antigua as soon as your dates are fixed, because December and Holy Week sell out first. Every trip starts with a flight into Guatemala City.
