• San Diego (inside the walls): steps from the cathedral, the ramparts and the plazas, at the highest prices in the city.
• Getsemaní: just outside the walls, with street art, evening music and generally lower rates.

How do you get to and around Cartagena?

What should you not miss in Cartagena?

• The city walls (Las Murallas). Free to walk; the stretch near Baluarte de Santo Domingo is the classic sunset spot.
• Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. One of the largest Spanish fortresses in the Americas, open daily 8am to 6pm. The official site lists COP 25,000 for foreign adults; confirm at the ticket office, since visitor reports in 2026 cite higher prices. Free on the last Sunday of the month (except January and December).
• Getsemaní. Murals across whole blocks, plus live salsa and champeta spilling into the plazas in the evening.

Cartagena’s city beaches, mainly along Bocagrande, are convenient but crowded, grey-sand and backed by high-rises. Fine for an hour, not a highlight.

The better beaches are offshore.
