Where to Stay in Cartagena: The Walls Set the Price, Not the Beach

Most cities charge you for the beach. Cartagena charges you for a wall.

The old stone ring around Centro and San Diego is the single biggest factor in what you pay, and the beach neighborhoods outside it are the cheaper option, not the pricier one. That is the reverse of what almost every visitor expects.

So skip this guide if you already know you want a heritage room behind the ramparts and the premium is fine. Everyone else: four areas below are genuinely different trips, and one of them is a resort holiday that happens to be near a colonial city.

Early September is shoulder season on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, so treat these as a quiet-season floor rather than a year-round quote, and expect the December to March dry window to run higher. Attraction prices, transfer costs and the advisory status are ranges compiled from operator and published guide sources on 8 August 2026, listed at the bottom, and they move: confirm at the ticket booth.

Travel advisory note (checked 8 August 2026): the US State Department rates Colombia Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, country-wide, issued 31 March 2026, citing crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and natural disasters. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office takes a narrower position: it names specific no-go areas rather than issuing a country-wide warning, and it does not advise against travel to Colombia’s main tourist areas. Cartagena, along with Bogotá, Medellín and Santa Marta, sits outside the separate US Level 4 “Do Not Travel” departments entirely, and nothing in this guide routes through them. The Areas, One by One

Centro and San Diego: inside the walls, and worth it once

The walled city is two halves of the same square kilometre. Centro holds the cathedral, Plaza Santo Domingo and Plaza de los Coches. San Diego, to the north, is the residential half: the same ochre facades and balconies, fewer carriage horses, slightly less noise.

The prices from our September sample: Maloka Boutique in San Diego around $74, Cartagena Royal (8.4) in San Diego around $140, Santo Toribio (8.6) in Centro around $155, Bantu by Faranda (5-star, 9.1) in San Diego around $235, and Noi 1860 in Centro, the one with the rooftop pool, at the top of the sample around $301.

The honest catch is the heat. The stone holds it, and a street that is a pleasure at 7am is a slog at 1pm. Book a room with real air conditioning and treat midday as indoor time.

Book this if you want to walk out of the lobby into the old town and never think about transport. Skip it if your budget wants a sub-$70 room, because that room does not exist inside the walls.

Getsemaní: the atmosphere play, at a price we could not verify

Getsemaní sits immediately outside the gate, a 10-minute walk from Plaza de los Coches. It is the quarter people mean when they say Cartagena has an evening scene: murals down every lane, food stalls, live music, and dancing in Plaza de la Trinidad.

Here is the honest gap. Our live September 2026 sample returned no Getsemaní listings at all, so we are not inventing a price band for it. The received wisdom is that it undercuts the walled city, and it may well for your dates, but you should confirm that in the search above rather than take it from us or anyone else.

What we can say plainly: it is louder than San Diego at night, it is a short walk rather than a ride from the sights, and the street art and music are free.

Book this if you want the evenings more than the ramparts and you are willing to price it yourself. Skip it if you sleep badly or you want a guaranteed rate before you commit.

Bocagrande: sand at the door, and the trade you are making

Bocagrande is the peninsula of high-rises south of the old town, with a strip of beach on one side and a bay on the other. It is where you stay if you want a pool, a mall and sand within a two-minute walk.

Our sample put Hotel Regatta (7.9) at around $151 and the InterContinental (8.6) at around $214, both in Bocagrande.

The trade is the beach itself. Bocagrande’s sand is convenient, but it is crowded, grey rather than white, and hemmed in by towers. The genuinely good beach day here is a boat trip to the Rosario Islands or Barú, which runs around $35 to $55 per person for an independent public-boat option, around $45 to $75 for a standard organized tour, and $90 to $180 or more for a private boat, plus a mandatory pier fee of around $10 in cash. Book that from anywhere in the city.

Book this if you want facilities and sand and you are happy ride-hailing to the old town. Skip it if the colonial architecture is the reason you picked Cartagena.

La Boquilla and the Zona Norte: the resort belt

North of the airport, the coast opens into a strip of resorts. It is quieter, more spread out, and built around the property rather than the city.

The sample here: Sonesta in La Boquilla around $171, Las Americas Casa de Playa (5-star, 8.7) around $175, and Las Americas Torre del Mar (5-star, 8.7) around $211.

The catch is that you will ride-hail for every single thing, and Cartagena’s old town is a genuinely walkable city that you have just moved out of walking range of.

Book this if you want a pool-and-beach week with a couple of day trips into town. Skip it if you plan to be in the walled city daily, because the cumulative rides and the lost spontaneity cost more than the rate difference.

Picks by Budget

The absence in that table is the most useful thing in it. No true budget tier surfaced inside the walled city, with the floor sitting around $74 a night. For scale, our Bogotá sample on the same dates started around $24 and Santa Marta’s around $45. Cartagena is the expensive stop on a Colombia trip, and knowing that before you build the route saves you a bad surprise halfway through it.

Getting Around From Any of These Bases

Staying Comfortable and Safe in Each Area

The safety question in Cartagena is behavioral, not geographic. All four areas above are ordinary tourist neighborhoods.

Phone snatching is the pattern that actually affects visitors, and it concentrates where crowds do: the plazas, the beach, busy gateways. The local phrase for the fix is “no dar papaya”, which translates roughly as “don’t give away the papaya”, meaning do not hand anyone an easy opportunity. Keep the phone in a pocket rather than in your hand on a crowded street.

One more, stated plainly because it is a documented traveler-safety topic rather than a rumor: scopolamine, locally “burundanga”, is an incapacitating drug used to facilitate robbery, and the documented route is accepting food, drink or items from a stranger, including people met on dating apps. US Embassy guidance is simply not to accept them and to watch what you are served being poured. That is the whole precaution.

Ride-hailing apps sit in a legal grey area in Colombia, but they are widely used and are generally treated as the safer choice over hailing a car on the street. Use them and do not overthink the regulatory argument.

On dress: coastal Cartagena is far more casual by day than the Andes cities, and beachwear is normal in Bocagrande and La Boquilla. Mid-range and upmarket restaurants in the walled city do enforce dress codes in the evening, so shorts, flip-flops and caps can get you turned away. Booking Tips for Cartagena Hotels

• Move your dates out of December to March if the rate matters. Our sample sat in September, the quiet, wetter shoulder, and the dry high season prices above it. The coast is hot and humid all year either way, so you are trading rain risk for money.
• Air conditioning is not a luxury feature here, it is the feature. In a heritage building inside the walls, check the reviews specifically for cooling before you book the pretty room.
• A “walled city” listing can mean Getsemaní. Some properties describe themselves as old-town when they are outside the gate. Check the map pin, not the description.
• On the Bocagrande strip, “sea view” and “sea access” are different claims. So are “beach” and “beach club”. Read what is actually included.
• Sort by total price for your exact dates so taxes appear before you commit, and favour a free-cancellation rate. Caribbean-coast pricing swings hard around holiday weeks.
• Two bases work well on a longer stay. Two or three nights inside the walls for the old town, then a couple of nights on the beach, beats commuting either direction daily.

Flights are the other half of the budget. Bogotá to Cartagena fares in mid-2026 started around $28 round trip on JetSMART, around $62 on Avianca and around $83 on LATAM, though overall fares on the route were running roughly 35% higher than the previous year. Medellín to Cartagena started around $25 to $38 one way. Ultra-low-cost fares on Wingo and JetSMART are carry-on only, so price the checked bag before you compare.

You will want mobile data from the moment you land, because your ride-hail app, your hotel map and your boat booking all need it.

Rafael Núñez airport sits about 10 minutes from the walled city, and an official taxi from the airport booth runs around 15,000 to 22,000 COP, roughly $5 to $7. Uber and InDriver both operate in Cartagena, though drivers often ask you to meet them just outside the airport perimeter rather than at the terminal door.

Can I drink the tap water in Cartagena?

No. Cartagena’s utility, Acuacar, treats the supply, but the aging distribution network, coastal heat and periodic outages can compromise quality by the time water reaches the tap. Use bottled or filtered water for drinking here, unlike Bogotá and Medellín inland, where the tap water is treated to a standard locals commonly drink straight.
