The short version

I’m going to argue you out of this upgrade before I argue you into it — because most people reading a Revolut Premium review don’t actually need Premium. The free Standard plan already kills foreign transaction fees. Premium only earns its €9.99/month when you bump into the free plan’s ceilings. So the real question isn’t “is Premium good?” — it’s “do you hit the limits?” Here’s how to know.

What you get over the free plan

  • Unlimited currency exchange at the real interbank rate — no monthly allowance cap and no weekend markup. (Standard gives the real rate too, but only up to ~€1,000/month and with a ~1% weekend surcharge.)
  • Higher fee-free ATM withdrawals — around €400/month versus the free plan’s ~€200.
  • Travel insurance — overseas medical, trip cancellation, delayed baggage (with conditions; read them).
  • Multiple virtual cards — create a separate card number per subscription, the backbone of the security system I use daily.
  • Priority support and disposable virtual cards for unknown merchants.

The exact upgrade test

Add up your last 12 months and ask three questions:

  1. Did you regularly exchange more than ~€1,000/month in foreign currency?
  2. Do you withdraw cash often in destinations where cash is king?
  3. Would the travel insurance replace a policy you’d otherwise buy?

A “yes” to any one of these and Premium pays for itself quickly. Three “no"s and you’re about to spend €120/year lifting limits you never reach — stay on Standard.

The honest tradeoffs

Pros
  • Unlimited real-rate FX, no weekend markup
  • Higher fee-free ATM allowance
  • Travel insurance can replace a standalone policy
  • Multiple virtual cards for the security setup
  • Disposable cards included
Cons
  • ~€120/year — pointless under the free limits
  • Insurance has conditions and excesses — read them
  • Overkill for a couple of trips a year
  • ATM allowance still capped (just higher)

Who should get it (and who shouldn’t)

Get Premium if you exchange currency heavily, withdraw cash often, or want the insurance. Skip it if you don’t bump into the free allowances — and don’t jump to Metal unless its cashback and lounge perk genuinely cover the extra fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Revolut Premium worth it?

Only if you hit the free plan’s limits. It pays off when you exchange more than ~€1,000/month, withdraw cash often, or want the travel insurance. Otherwise, stay on Standard.

What does it include over Standard?

Unlimited real-rate exchange (no cap, no weekend markup), higher ATM allowance (~€400/month), travel insurance, multiple virtual cards, priority support and disposable cards.

Is the travel insurance any good?

It can replace a basic standalone policy (medical, cancellation, delayed baggage) but has conditions, limits and excesses — read the policy first.

Premium or Metal?

Premium for unlimited exchange, higher ATM limits and insurance. Metal only if cashback plus the lounge perk covers the extra fee for your spending.

Verdict

Premium is the upgrade worth paying for — but only if you’ve outgrown free. Run the three-question test above. If you pass, sign up or upgrade through my link below; if not, the free Standard plan is genuinely the smarter choice.
