Quick Answer
As of 14 September 2026. Every fee and interest rate on this page comes from the provider’s own product page or price schedule (sources below), not from a comparison portal. Cards whose terms VoyageHacks couldn’t read on the provider’s site on the day of checking aren’t in the table, including the Advanzia Gebührenfrei Mastercard Gold.
The method: how VoyageHacks compares
No test with sample cards, just a check of published terms against six criteria:
- Annual fee and the condition under which it’s waived.
- Foreign transaction fee, the markup on payments in a currency other than the euro.
- Cash at ATMs at home and abroad.
- Card type: debit card, charge card or revolving credit card.
- Effective annual interest rate and whether installment payment is preset.
- Account condition: does the card require a checking account with the same provider?
Three card types every comparison should distinguish:
- A debit card charges every payment from your checking account immediately.
- A charge card collects spend and takes it in full once a month, with no interest. Every German American Express personal card is a charge card.
- A revolving credit card allows installment payment, but charges interest for it, often over 20% a year.

The winners by use case
Best card for travel: no foreign transaction fee
DKB Visa Debit (in active status), Revolut, N26 or C24. All four charge no foreign transaction fee on card payments. On the DKB, that only applies in active status; without it, it’s 2.20%.
- Get this if you pay in non-euro currencies and don’t need a points program.
- Skip it if you’re booking a rental car with a deposit: debit cards get charged at SIXT instead of held.
- Alternative: a free revolving card with no foreign transaction fee, but only with a manual switch to full payoff.
Best real credit card with no annual fee
Santander BestCard Smart. At 16.72% APR, it has the lowest stated interest rate among no-annual-fee cards, no foreign transaction fee and four free withdrawals a month. The catch: from the second year, it’s only free at €2,000 or more in annual card spend.
- Get this if you want a real credit card for deposits and spend over €2,000 a year on it.
- Skip it if you stay under €2,000 in spend.
- Alternative: easybank credit card, permanently €0, but 21.21% interest and installment payment preset.
Best card for points, lounges and insurance
American Express Platinum or Gold. No card in Germany combines lounges, hotel status, credits and travel insurance the way the Platinum does. The Gold is the cheaper metal card with no lounges. The American Express Card earns the same points for €60 a year.
- Get this if you travel often, use the credits and redeem points deliberately.
- Skip it if you mostly pay outside the eurozone (2% markup) or often shop at small merchants with no Amex acceptance.
- Alternative: Miles & More Gold, if you specifically want Lufthansa miles.

Every German Amex charges a 2 % foreign transaction fee. Card illustrations are not the original designs.
Which Amex fits you is worked out with a calculator and card finder in the Amex card comparison Germany.
Best card for Lufthansa miles
Miles & More credit card from Deutsche Bank. American Express Membership Rewards doesn’t transfer directly to Miles & More, as the partner list in the Membership Rewards guide shows. The Miles & More Blue costs €5.50 a month and, per the provider, costs nothing for 12 months if you apply by 30 September 2026; the Gold costs €11.50 a month. Both charge 1.95% foreign transaction fee.
Best card for PAYBACK collectors
PAYBACK American Express (€0) over PAYBACK Visa (€29). Both earn PAYBACK points on every payment. The Amex costs nothing, while the Visa has no foreign transaction fee and is accepted more widely. If you travel outside the eurozone often, take the Visa; everyone else, the Amex. Details in the PAYBACK American Express review.
The installment trap on “free” credit cards
Most free revolving cards earn their money on interest. Per the providers themselves:
| Card | Preset | Effective APR | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanseatic GenialCard | installment payment preset, 3%, min. €20 | 19.92% | switch to full payoff immediately |
| easybank credit card | 3% installment, min. €30 preset | 21.21% | choose 100% payoff, costs €2 a month |
| TF Mastercard Gold | check the repayment setting | 25.09% | set up full payoff |
| awa7 Visa | check the repayment setting | 21.96% | set up full payoff |
A quick calculation: €2,000 in vacation spend paid off at a 3% monthly installment, at around 20% interest, runs for years and costs several hundred euros in interest. That’s exactly how the free card becomes the most expensive one in the comparison.
Rental cars: real credit card or debit card?
The deposit is the most common reason to own a real credit card. The official rules from the two big rental companies:
| SIXT Germany | Europcar Germany | |
|---|---|---|
| Credit card | deposit is “only held” | requires a “valid credit card”; Amex, Diners, Mastercard, Visa |
| Debit card | Visa and Mastercard debit accepted, deposit “charged directly” | “payment with Visa or Mastercard debit cards is possible” |
| Revolut, N26 | only regular debit cards, no prepaid variants | not specifically named |
| Deposit amount | rental price plus a surcharge per group, e.g. Standard + €300 | not officially quoted |
American Express is accepted as a credit card by both. Anyone renting with a debit card should keep the deposit amount available in their account until it’s refunded after return. More in the rental car section.
The combination that fits most people
- An Amex for everyday spending in Germany and online, for points, insurance and deposits: the American Express Card (€60, free the following year at €9,000 in spend) or the free PAYBACK American Express.
- A fee-free Visa or Mastercard for bakeries, markets and non-euro countries: DKB Visa Debit, Revolut, N26 or C24.
Why a second card is essential in Germany is covered in the Amex acceptance in Germany guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the best credit card in Germany in 2026?
There isn’t one for everyone. For travel with no fee: a card with no foreign transaction fee, like the DKB Visa Debit in active status or Revolut. As a real credit card with no annual fee and the lowest stated interest rate: the Santander BestCard Smart at 16.72% APR. For points, lounges and insurance: the American Express Platinum (€720 a year) or Gold (€240 a year). As of 14 September 2026.
Which credit card is genuinely free?
With no annual fee and no account condition, options include the easybank credit card, the TF Mastercard Gold, the Hanseatic GenialCard and awa7, plus the PAYBACK American Express. Free doesn’t mean cheap, though: on the revolving cards, installment payment is often preset, and the effective interest rates run, per the providers, from 19.92% to 25.09%.
What’s the difference between a credit card and a debit card?
A debit card charges every payment straight from your checking account. A real credit card has its own credit line and settles in a batch, either in full (a charge card, for example American Express) or in installments with interest (a revolving card). The difference matters most for rental cars: at SIXT, the deposit is charged on a debit card but only held on a credit card.
Do I need a real credit card for a rental car?
Not always, but it’s more convenient. SIXT accepts Visa and Mastercard debit cards in Germany, including Revolut or N26, as long as they’re not prepaid cards, but then charges the deposit instead of just holding it. Europcar requires a valid credit card, but also allows payment with Visa or Mastercard debit cards. Check the station’s terms before booking.
Why is installment payment risky on credit cards?
Because the interest is high and installment payment is preset on some cards. The Hanseatic GenialCard has installment payment preset, per the provider, the easybank credit card presets a 3% monthly installment, and choosing 100% payoff there costs €2 a month. Effective annual interest rates of 19.92% to 25.09% quickly turn a free card into the most expensive one.
Is an American Express worth it over a free Visa?
Only if you use the perks. An American Express Platinum costs €720 a year and comes with lounges, hotel status and €650 in credits; the American Express Card costs €60 with Membership Rewards points. Every German Amex, though, charges a 2% foreign transaction fee and isn’t accepted everywhere. The best combination is usually an Amex for points plus a fee-free Visa or Mastercard.
Verdict
The “best” credit card in Germany is almost always a pair: an American Express for points, insurance and deposits, and a fee-free Visa or Mastercard for what Amex can’t do. Anyone taking a free revolving card should switch to full payoff on day one. The Amex referral offers above bring up to 85,000 points for the Platinum or 50,000 for the Gold; every other card is applied for directly with the provider.
