Where should I stay in Venice for the first time?
For a first trip, stay on the island itself — ideally in San Marco or San Polo near the Rialto, so you can walk to the main sights and step out into an empty Venice early in the morning, for roughly 150 to 400 euros a night. If that’s too much, Cannaregio and Dorsoduro give you the same island magic with more local character for less. Whatever you do, stay on the island rather than mainland Mestre if you possibly can. Those nightly rates fit into the bigger picture of what a trip to Italy costs per day , and our hotel booking guide has more tips on finding a fair rate before you commit.
How much do hotels in Venice cost?
On the island, budget rooms and guesthouses in Cannaregio or Castello run 90 to 180 euros a night, mid-range hotels in San Polo, Santa Croce or Dorsoduro 120 to 250 euros, and central San Marco hotels 180 to 400 euros and up. Mainland Mestre is cheaper at 60 to 110 euros. Add the city tourist tax, whose rate varies by accommodation type and location. Prices rise around Carnival — 23 January to 9 February in 2027 — and in high summer, so compare live rates and book ahead. Getting to Venice by train is usually the easiest part of the budget, and whether a rail pass is worth it in Italy is worth checking before you buy — our answers guide covers more of these Italy trip-planning questions.
